Cycle Insurance Guide to Commuting by Bicycle
Communting to work by cycle is becoming increasingly popular in the UK.
With the costs of fuel rising, and parking spaces becoming rarer and rarer, being able to glide past motorists stuck in a traffic jam whilst on your bicycle in the cycle lane does have a certain appeal.
The reason that cycling is becoming so popular are the many benefits owning a bike can bring. As well as saving money on fuel and parking as mentioned above, a bicycle is an awful lot cheaper to purchase than a car or a motorbike, and does not damage the environment when running, making it the greenest mode of transport apart from walking.
Riding a bike to work is faster than walking and often just as quick as driving or using public transport, if you live nearby. There are also many health benefits to be had from a daily cycle ride, and the adrenalin and endorphins produced when exercising in this way are sure to put you in a good mood for work. What better way to start the day?
If you decide to purchase a bicycle for commuting to work, you should look to also equip yourself with several other recommended pieces of equipment, including a helmet, luminous clothing, and repair kit. More details of these can be found in our Road Safety Tips.
You should also check with your work where you can leave your bike during the day. There might be specific cycle parking at your work address, or you may be able to leave your bike out of the way in a staffroom or corridor, or park nearby in local public cycle bays. Be sure to check out our Cycle Security Guide for details on cycle locks and other security ideas.
You should also make sure you have Cycle Insurance in place to give you cover if your bicycle is stolen, or you are involved in an accident and need Third Party Liability cover.
